CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPERTIES OF WOOL

Wool

Wool is a protein based animal product made from the hair fibres of various animals but most commonly sheep. IT IS A NATURAL FIBRE.

CHARACTERISTICS
Swatch of wool fabric.
  • Excellent wrinkle resistance and elasticity.
  • Exceptional absorbency; holds a lot of moisture before it feels damp.
  • Traps air in fibres, providing great warmth.
  • Can be treated to resist insects, shrinkage and stains.
  • Can be permanently creased or pleated.
  • Does not attract static so will not attract dust or dirt.
  • Different grades from the many varieties of sheep are blended to provide a large variety of weights and construction. Can also be blended with other fibres.
  • Will shrink and pill if not treated.
 GENERAL CARE
  • Many wool-based fabrics are dry-cleaned because wool weakens and stretches when wet. However, some are hand or gentle machine washable.
  • If washed, it is usually best to lay it out flat to dry.
  • To avoid damage to the fabric, press on the wrong side using a moderate heat and press cloth.
  • Avoid bleaches.
  • Avoid heat when drying, and do not tumble dry unless care instructions allow.
 SEWING
  • Can be moulded or eased in to give a perfect fit.
  • Generally sews and cuts well.
